The construction of the already delayed Shillong and Tura medical colleges will start by the end of this year.

This was disclosed by Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma during a media interaction in Shillong recently.

The chief minister confirmed that the land that has been identified for Tura Medical College is disputed, which is delaying the process.

However, he added that efforts are being made to resolve the issue and see that the project comes up at the earliest.

The Tura Medical College has been sanctioned for Rs 189 crore and the State Government has requested the Centre to consider the revised estimates of 244 crore.

As far as Shillong Medical College is concerned, Sangma said the government is moving forward on the project.

The patients at Reid Provincial Chest Hospital in Jhalupara where the proposed Shillong Medical College is supposed to come up cannot be shifted to the new building at Umsawli till necessary rectification in the design of the building is done, informed Conrad.

Reacting to a query about land acquisition, Sangma said the government is going to create a land bank in the State for the projects.

According to him, even for the National Games, the government wants to have a land bank for the interested parties to set up hotels in the city.
