Meghalaya independent MLA, Saleng A. Sangma will resign as member of the ninth Assembly on Monday at 11.30 am.

Saleng will then take over as the new president of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) in the state after giving up his membership in the Assembly.

Saleng, the two-time MLA, won in 2013 from Gambegre constituency as independent candidate.

“I will resign as member of the Assembly on Monday,” Saleng said on Sunday.

NCP state working president, Vijay Raj said that Saleng will assume charge as president of the party at 12.30 pm at NCP office near Pantaloon here.

Saleng will replace former state NCP chief and former MLA of South Shillong, Sanbor Shullai.

Shullai had joined the BJP recently.

Saleng said that some former legislators from Garo Hills would also join NCP and contest the upcoming Assembly polls with NCP ticket.

The NCP won only two seats in the 2013 Assembly elections – Sanbor Shullai from South Shillong and Marthon Sangma from Mendipathar constituency.

Marthon would join the ruling Congress soon.
