A meeting on disaster management preparedness was held at the Haflong Circuit House on Monday with various line departments in presence of Deputy Commissioner Amitabh Rajkhowa.

Other members who were also present at the meeting included Col Gagan Pandey of 43 Assam Rifles Superintendent of Police, Dima Hasao, Prasanta Saikia.

A brief presentation was done by Ricky Phukan, the District Project Officer of the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), Dima Hasao.

Discussion was held regarding prevention and mitigation of the disaster and also how to be prepared for the approaching monsoon in Dima Hasao, stated a press communiqué.

Most of the places in Dima Hasao district become vulnerable to landslides during monsoon due to incessant rainfall. It was discussed that in order to prevent inconvenience to the public during the disaster such as road blockades caused during heavy rainfall, rescue resources such as JCBs, cranes and recovery vehicles will be placed at strategic locations.

All line departments were given briefing about their roles such as identifying temples, churches and community halls entrusted to the block development officers if required in case of relief.

During the discussion it was decided to form Village Disaster Management Committees (VDMC) and Circle Disaster Management Committees (CDMC) at various levels for speedy action.

It was informed during the meeting that petitions from the interior rural areas were yet to be received for the grants provided to the victims by the government. The Deputy Commissioner asked the line departments and the DDMA to look into the matter with an immediate solution regarding the hindrances that might occur during any natural calamity and remain prepared, the press communiqué added.

The Dima Hasao DC applauded the effort of the team of Dima Hasao DDMA in spite of various shortcomings and limited resources.
