Erosion has been posing serious threat to the people of Mulang village under Margherita Sub-division in Tinsukia district for several months.

The erosion by both Tirap and Buri Dehing rivers has threatened to engulf the embankments. Margherita is around 47 km from Tinsukia district.

Tirap river and Buri Dehing river are coming closer to the village by pissing serious threat to the lives and property of people.

Altogether 700 bighas of agricultural land have already been engulfed by the rivers so far.

“The erosion has been posing a serious threat for the people of our village and the rivers are coming closer to our village,” said Chandra Gautam, president of Village Defence Party (VDP) in Mulang village.

“The historical 19th century Ledo Mulang Khamti Buddhist monastery is few metres away from the erosion site. We have urged the government to take immediate steps to stop the erosion but till date no step taken,” he added.

The village has a total population of 10,000.

During a meeting of Margherita Journalists’ Association, a discussion was held between the locals and Margherita MLA Bhaskar Sharma on constant erosion by rivers at Margherita.

Bhaskar Sharma assured that their government would take step to stop the erosion.

The locals alleged that despite several pleas to the government their demand has not been fulfilled. “The previous government had not done anything to stop the erosion. We voted the BJP to power for change but till date they have not taken any measure to stop the erosion,” he added.

Sources said this time some of the villagers have thought not to participate in Gaon Panchyat election. Gaon panchyat election is going to be held on next month.

“Last year floods created havoc for the people of the village and the government has assured help but till date nothing has happened,” said a local villager adding, “Every year flood ravaged our village and destroy our crops but government is showing step motherly attitude towards us.”
