Guwahati: Security forces have identified around 55 sensitive zones in Manipur to enhance their presence as part of efforts to address the ethnic violence that has plagued the state for over a year.
Manipur Public Works Minister Govindas Konthoujam said in Imphal on Saturday that adequate security will be deployed to these sensitive zones.
During the parliamentary polls, central forces were temporarily withdrawn from some areas of the violence-hit Northeastern state. With the elections concluded and tensions persisting, these forces are being redeployed.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah chaired a high-level meeting last Monday to review the security situation in Manipur and called for an increase in the strategic deployment of central forces to restore peace.
However, the redeployment of security forces is facing opposition in some areas. The Hill Tribal Council issued a statement condemning and demanding the withdrawal of the proposal to deploy the Border Security Force (BSF) in Tengnoupal district, arguing that it would undermine peace and harmony in the area.
