Guwahati: With the rising conflict in Myanmar, at least 5,400 people from Myanmar have reportedly sought refuge in Manipur’s Kamjong district.
According to a report by The Hindu, these people have fled Myanmar due to fears of aerial bombardment and attacks.
These refugees have been residing in temporary settlements since November of last year.

The report also states that there is a possibility of all the refugees returning to Myanmar once the situation stabilizes.
Currently, their safety remains at risk in their homeland.
A top official stated that the State government is aware of their presence.

Reports further state that the influx of undocumented migrants into the Naga-dominated Kamjong district adds complexity to the ongoing ethnic conflict in Manipur between the tribal Kuki-Zo people and the majority Meitei community.
Since the conflict began on May 3, 2023, at least 221 people have been killed, and over 50,000 have been displaced. Manipur’s diverse population includes 34 Scheduled Tribes, among them the Kuki-Zo-Hmar people and the Nagas.
