India’s legendary boxer from Manipur, Mary Kom topped the list of ‘most admired women in India’ prepared by YouGov defeating Kiran Bedi, Lata Mangeshkar and a host of Bollywood celebrities.
Mary Kom, the Indian Olympic boxer, is the only woman to become world amateur boxing champion for record six times and the only woman boxer to have won a medal in each one of the seven world championships.
She is the first Indian woman boxer to win gold at the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Mary Kom topped the list of ‘most admired women in India’ with an admiration score of 10.36 pc, say media reports.
India’s first IPS officer and current Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry Kiran Bedi came close second in the list just ahead of legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar.
Bedi came second with a score of 9.46 pc while Lata Mangeshkar’s score was 9.23 pc.
Former union minister late Sushma Swaraj was placed fourth with a score of 7.13 pc.
While actor Deepika Padukone has been placed 5th with a score of 6.35%, Malala Yousafzai was placed 6th (5.75%) followed by former US President Barack Obama’s wife Michelle Obama (5.53%) and internationally acclaimed actor Priyanka Chopra (5.11%).
According to the list prepared after the survey, Mary Kom is the only sportswoman in the top 25.
Mary Kom was recently also adjudged as the best female athlete in Asia at the first-ever ‘Awards for Asia’ ceremony organised by the Asian Sportswriters Union (AIPS Asia).
Union minister of state (independent charge) for youth affairs and sports Kiren Rijiju while sharing a news report in this regard on his Twitter handle stated: “This is what I called Sports Power! Mary Kom are you there?”
It may be mentioned that Prime Minister Narendra Modi emerged as the ‘most admired man in India in the survey.
Modi was ahead of cricketing legend MS Dhoni.
The list was compiled following a survey conducted by YouGov.
The survey was prepared with views from 42,000 people from across 41 countries with two separate categories – men and women.
