Ahead of the Assembly elections, miscreants have targeted Congress leaders in Manipur.

A grenade and an IED exploded near two Congress leaders’ houses in Imphal on Wednesday triggering tension in the poll-bound northeastern state.

The 60-Member Manipur Assembly will go to the polls in two phases on February 27 and March 3.

No one was, however, injured in the blasts that occurred in Imphal West and Imphal East districts.

No insurgent group has also claimed responsibility for the blasts. Police registered a case, but no arrest has been made yet.

The first attack was at 2.20 am when a grenade went off at the gates of former MLA Salam Joy Singh’s home at Samurou Naorem Chakpram under Wangoi assembly seat in Imphal West, TOI reported.

About 30 minutes later, an IED exploded at the gate of Khuraijam Ratankumar Singh’s house at Kanglasangomsang under Khurai seat in Imphal East district.

Window panes and walls of his outhouse and some vehicles were reportedly damaged in the blast.

Both Ratankumar and Singh are Congress ticket aspirants from the Khurai and Wangoi assembly constituencies respectively.
