Athuan Abonmei

The Joint Action Committee (JAC), which was formed to demand justice for Manipur’s social activist Athuan Abonmei, has decided to call off their state-wide agitation.

The umbrella organization took the decision on Wednesday after following an agreement signed between Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh and leaders of the JAC.

Abonmei, who was attending a government function at Tamenglong on September 22, was abducted by suspected militants under the nose of the police and later killed.

As per reports, the Manipur government has agreed to allow the National Investigation Agency (NIA) to continue its probe into the kidnap and murder of Abonmei.

An officer not below the rank of Additional Chief Secretary shall investigate and hand over the findings to the NIA, The Hindu reported.

Abonmei’s son will be given a position in the Police Department.

An ex-gratia of Rs 10 lakh will be paid to the bereaved family and a memorial stone will be erected for Abonmei.

The dead body shall be claimed for performing the last rites.

Manipur government had only transferred the District Collector (DC) and Superintendent of Police in charge and but the tribal and non-tribal organizations of the state have demanded suspension of DC and SP.

On Wednesday, the Tousem Students’ Union and the Kuki Students’ Organisation, Jiribam and Tamenglong branches, said that if the DC and SP were not suspended, National Highways would be blocked by protesters, and construction work on national projects in tribal areas would be disrupted.
