An artificial football turf was inaugurated in Churachandpur district of Manipur on Sunday.

Manipur agriculture minister V Hangkhanlian, who hails from Churachandpur, inaugurated the football turf at Hiangtam Lamka, 65 km south of Imphal.

The new weathered ground will be suitable for 6 a side football matches.

Churachandpur deputy commissioner Pawan Yadav also attended the inaugural function.

The turf was installed with a total cost of Rs 60 lakh with funding from Rajya Sabha MP Mary Kom under Members of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme.

Speaking on the occasion minister V Hangkhanlian expressed his happiness on the development of the turf.

“The new turf will certainly be beneficial for the football-loving crowd of the district,” Hangkhanlian said.

He appealed the district level officers (DLO) and concerned stakeholders to encourage the youngsters in sports and extend maximum co-operation to facilitate the newly inaugurated football turf.

He further said, “The Manipur cabinet in its November 5 meeting recommended the Centre for establishing a medical college in Churachandpur, which is a long-pending wish of the people here.

Churachadpur DC Pawan Yadav said, “The turf will be an asset of the district and this will certainly help the youngsters to hon their football skills.”

“The turf will go a long way in developing the future of football in the district,” he reiterated.
