Star boxer from Manipur, MC Mary Kom, has been honoured with Padma Vibhushan on Monday. 

President Ram Nath Kovind gave away the Padma Vibhushan award to MC Mary Kom during a function at the Rashtrapati Bhawan. 

“President Kovind presents Padma Vibhushan to Smt Mangte Chungneijang Mary Kom for Sports. A six-time AIBA Women’s Boxing Champion, Mary Kom is a renowned athlete and face of women boxing in India,” an official tweet from the Rashtrapati Bhawan read.

Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh has congratulated Mary Kom for being honoured with Padma Vibhushan. 

“Congratulations to ‘Magnificent Mary’ Smt @MangteC Ji on receiving the Padma Vibhushan for Sports. Not only is she a Boxing legend but also an inspiration to millions of Indians,” tweeted Manipur CM Biren Singh.

President Ram Nath Kovind presented Padma awards to 73 individuals on Monday. 

Meanwhile, India’s hockey captain Rani Rampal received the Padma Shri award along with India women’s football star Oinam Bembem Devi. 

World Cup-winning former India cricketer Zaheer Khan, hockey star MP Ganesh, shooter Jitu Rai, archer Tarundeep Rai were among the others who were nominated for Padma Shri in 2020. 

The Padma awards are given in three categories — Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri — and announced annually on the eve of Republic Day.
