Manipur government will approach the Election Commission of India (ECI), requesting it to conduct bye-elections on all 13 vacant assembly seats instead of just two in the state.

“We are requesting the ECI to conduct bye-elections in the left out vacant assembly constituencies too,” Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh on Friday.

He was responding to a question after flagging off a cycle rally in the capital held on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti and National Cleanliness Day 2020.

It may be mentioned here that the Manipur CM on September 24 had dropped six of his cabinet ministers and inducted five new faces in a major reshuffle.

The ministers were assigned portfolios three days after their induction.

The BJP national vice president Bijayant Panda, on the day of oath-taking ceremony, even hinted of inducting another minister after the bye-elections.

It is worth mentioning here that ECI on September 29 announced that bye-elections for Lilong and Wangjing-Tentha assembly constituencies will be held on November 7.

However, presently there are 13 assembly constituencies which are lying vacant in the 60-member Manipur legislative assembly.

The vacancies were created after nine MLAs resigned and four were disqualified.
