IMPHAL: In its ongoing war against drugs, Manipur government seized narcotics worth Rs 7,887,76,32,330 and registered 2351 cases under the NDPS Act 1985 since 2017.

During this period, 2943 individuals have been arrested, according to an official statement released on Friday (May 17).

As part of the War on Drugs campaign, approximately 16,161 acres of poppy cultivation in Churachandpur and Kangpokpi districts of Manipur were destroyed.

However, Manipur has seen an increase in poppy plantation areas, with the Narcotic and Border Affairs data revealing that 4305 acres of poppy plants destroyed in 2022-23.

Churachandpur, Kangpokpi, and Tengnoupal districts of Manipur, accounted for 1250, 1108, and 566 acres of destruction, respectively, totaling 68% of the overall area eradicated.

Since 2006, at least 996 villages have emerged across Manipur, a phenomenon attributed to illegal immigrants settling in unsurveyed hill areas, according to Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh.
