With COVID cases in India on the rise at an unprecedented rate, the Congress party has decided to postpone its major rallies in all the election-bound states including Manipur. 

The All-India Congress Committee (AICC) has asked the party units of the election-bound states to assess the COVID situation in their respective states and take a call on holding rallies. 

“Congress has decided to postpone major rallies in the poll-bound states. We have asked state units to assess the COVID-19 situation in their states and take a decision on holding rallies,” Congress general secretary KC Venugopal told ANI. 

Five states: Manipur, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Goa and Uttarakhand are scheduled to go to polls in the next couple of months.

Many across the country have expressed apprehension over holding of elections amid rapid surge in Omicron cases. 

Manipur already has reported a case of the Omicron variant of COVID-19. 

Meanwhile, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) has accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of “pushing thousands of lives into danger” over holding of massive rallies in Manipur and Tripura on Tuesday.
