Manipur’s Keibul Lamjao, the only floating wildlife sanctuary in the world has a total of 251 Sangai (brow antlered deer).

Among the 251 Sangai deer which inhabits the Keibul Lamjao, located in Loktak Lake, 63 are males, 134 are females and 54 are fowls.

This was informed by Manipur Forest and Environment Minister Thounaojam Shyamkumar while replying to a question by S Bira Singh, MLA, on the concluding day of the Manipur Assembly session.

The Minister also informed the House that the Forest department in collaboration with locals has taken up various conservation activities, including opening rescue centres, social fencing, holding awareness programmes.

The department has also started demarcation of the national park in consultation with the State Revenue department, he added.

Replying to a question on the recent attacks on livestock by unknown animals, the Minister informed that 90 per cent of the attacks were carried out by cross breed dogs in the town areas.

This came to light when experts conducted a study by installing cameras at different locations, he said. Few such attacks were also carried out by a wild cat species, reports The Assam Tribune.

He said that in order to frame regulations for rearing dogs, the government will conduct a census of the domestic dogs in the town areas.
