Troops of Thoubal Battalion of 9 Sector Assam Rifles under the aegis of Headquarters of Inspector General of Assam Rifles (South) on Wednesday averted a disaster by detecting a powerful Improvised Explosive Device (IED) placed astride National Highway 102 in Thoubal district of Manipur, according to Assam Rifles sources.

“The IED weighing approximately eight kgs was placed near a culvert with explosive carefully concealed in an aluminum vessel and dug underground amongst the foliage along the Imphal-Moreh highway near Wangjing,” stated the PRO of Assam Rifles (south)in a release.

“Based on specific input about the IED, a joint team of Thoubal Battalion and Khongjom Police carried out intensive search around National Highway 102 between Khongjom and Wangjing and identified the site where the IED was likely placed.

The road was closed for public and traffic was diverted. The bomb disposal teams of IGAR (South) and Manipur Police reached the site and retrieved the IED which was later destroyed in situ.”

The timely and swift act by the Assam Rifles has not only prevented a major incident in the Thoubal District but also thwarted the nefarious designs of the underground militant groups to disturb peace and tranquility in the State, the release also stated.

The successful recovery of the IED also reinforced the collective effort of Assam Rifles and Manipur Police to ensure peace and safe environment in the State.
