A day before launching of Beti Bachao Beti Padhao on International Day of the Girl Child at the District Planning and Development Board conference hall in Phek on Thursday, a 37-year-old-man was arrested for allegedly raping his minor stepdaughter at Meluri on Wednesday.

Sources on Thursday said the man from Reguri village under Meluri subdivision allegedly raped his minor 11-year-old stepdaughter on several occasions.

The incident came to light when the mother of the victim caught her husband red-handed on Tuesday night. He was arrested by Meluri town police following a complaint lodged by a women’s organization namely the Meluri Town Women Welfare Society. The mother of the victim was stated to have informed her family members about the incident on Wednesday morning.

The minor is a class-VI student. The man reportedly attempted to kill his wife with a machete when he was caught red-handed.

The Pochury Hoho of Meluri town vehemently condemned the inhuman act and said there is no place for this kind of abominable act in the land. It also urged the authority concerned to book the accused under relevant sections of law and award capital punishment.
