Legendary singer of Assam Dipali Borthakur passed away on Friday, leaving a void in the music scenario of Assam. She was 77.
Even as the news of the demise of the legendary singer of yester-years was made official, a pall of gloom has descended across the State.
Popularly known as the “Nightingale of Assam”, Borthakur was ailing for quite some time over the last few years. She was in and out of Nemcare Hospital in Guwahati for quite some time now because her health would keep on deteriorating at regular intervals.
Borthakur was born on January 30 in the year 1941 at Sivasagar in eastern Assam. Late Dipali Borthakur was the wife of acclaimed artist Nilpaban Baruah.
Borthakur had lent her ethereal voice to several evergreen songs including Sonor Kharu Nalage Mok, Kon Man Boroshire Chip, Samay Pale Amar Phale Ebar Ahi Jaba that has made the Assamese music industry all the richer.
She has been honoured with various awards, including prestigious Padma Shri award for folk and traditional music in 1990-92.
The legendary was also awarded with Silipi Bota in 2010 by Assam Government and Aideu Handique Silpi Award in 2012 by the Sadou Asom Lekhika Somaroh Samiti.
She breathed her last around 1: 25 pm at the Nemcare Hospital in Guwahati. She was admitted to the hospital three days back due to multiple complications.
Her mortals remains will be kept at her at residence at Saurav Nagar in Beltola area in Guwahati. She will be cremated at Nabagraha crematorium here with full state honour.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has condoled the demise of the iconic singer.
Expressing grief at her demise, Modi tweeted, “With the passing away of Dipali Barthakur Ji, we have lost an outstanding singer who made Assamese music and culture even more popular across India and the world. Her melodious songs will continue to enthral generations to come. Condolences to her family and countless admirers.”

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has also expressed deep condolences at the demise of the legendary singer.
In a condolence message, the Chief Minister said that the death of Dipali Borthakur has created a irreparable void in the music scenario as well as the socio-cultural world of the State.
