Former senior Congress leader from Meghalaya, DD Lapang, on Monday spit venom on All India Congress Committee (AICC) president and Gandhi scion, Rahul Gandhi holding the latter responsible for Lapang’s quitting the party.

Lapang after returning home from the national capital on Monday, blamed Rahul Gandhi and his new policy to give mileage to young leaders at the cost of senior members for his decision to resign from the party.

The former Meghalaya Chief Minister, was accorded a warm welcome at Byrnihat and his local residents at Pahamsohthri in Nongpoh on Monday.

Speaking his heart out for the first time after surprising all by his resignation last week, Lapang said he was sidelined on several occasions even by state Congress leaders.

He was of the opinion that his sacrifices for the party for the last 45 years were insulted by the AICC president who has adopted the policy of giving key responsibilities to young guns in the party.

Several of his loyalists who were present at his reception shared the same views and expressed that they too had experienced ‘disrespect and insult’ towards Lapang by several of the present Congress leaders on several occasions.

They further asserted that they would continue to support him in whatever decision he takes.

Meanwhile, though Lapang has not specified as to which party he would join, he said he is ‘open to all’ and is ready to serve his people with ‘likeminded’ people.
