Leader of the Opposition in Assam Assembly and Congress legislator, Debabrata Saikia today slammed the BJP government in Centre for resorting to poll gimmick over Clause 6 of Assam Accord.

Slamming the BJP for going back on their promises of 2014 election, Saikia termed Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh’s statement on a high level committee to implement Clause 6 of the Assam Accord, a mere poll-time promise.

“Two things have become clear from the announcement made by Singh on Wednesday,” Saikia said.

“First, fierce opposition to the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016  has rattled the BJP and so  it is trying to hoodwink the people of Assam before the general elections.

“Secondly, the BJP is capable of using cheap gimmick and insincere promise to win elections,” he said.

“A high-level committee headed ex-bureaucrat G K Pillai, which was constituted by the erstwhile NDA government on Assam Accord implementation, had failed to make any progress during tenure of that government,” Saikia pointed out.

“After the Narendra Modi government came to power, Singh had announced on December 27, 2016 that Clause-6 of the Assam Accord  would be implemented by the incumbent NDA government.

“A few months later, on 26th April, 2017, the same tune was sung again following a tripartite  meeting in New Delhi between the Central government, the Assam  government and the leadership of the AASU.

“Therefore, yesterday’s flogging of  the same horse can only be interpreted as a pre-poll ‘jumla’ by the BJP to hoodwink electorate  in Assam,” said the Opposition leader in Assam Assembly.
