Keeping an objective to release various handloom produces and apparel garments among the societies on the eve of ensuing Sharadiya Durga Puja, the Handloom & Textile department of Dhemaji is organizing a six-day District Level Handloom Expo-2018 at Dhemaji town, which has got under way today.

Dhemaji MLA Dr Ranoj Pegu, who opened the expo in presence of Dhemaji Deputy Commissioner RA Korati and other department officials in the office premise of Dhemaji Nagar Mohila Silpa Byabosai Samabai Samity on Monday, said handloom garments are indispensable part of the Assamese society and the pride must be protected through promotion of the handloom sector in the state.

Pegu urged the women weavers to undergo in massive handloom activities to enhance their household economy.

He informed that state government is planning to organize a convention on Handloom & Textiles at Majuli covering Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Biswanath and Majuli districts in October this year.

Superintended of Handloom & Textile, Dhemaji, Chamapok Saikia informed that more than 1000 woman weavers from 80 primary weaving units and 20 NRLM run SHGs are taking part in the expo and selling their handloom products on subsidized rate. He has sought participation and cooperation from all sections of the society to make the expo grand success.

Saikia also informed that there are more than 50,000 registered weavers in the district, who are covered under various handloom activities schemes/ projects with skill development training for their economic self sustenance.

The expo recorded huge crowd on the inaugural day. It is reported that more female weavers from Jonai, Silapathar, Dhemaji and Gogamukh circles under the district are intending to participate the expo and sell their handloom products.

The expo will come to end on Saturday next.
