An alleged drug smuggler bound for Guwahati was arrested in Mao.

Imphal: An alleged drug smuggler bound for Guwahati was arrested along with brown sugar (drug) at Mao, Manipur’s last border town with Nagaland on the north, an official statement said here on Friday.

Arrest and seizure of the contraband items were made by a team of Mao Police Station under the supervision of Superintendent of Police (SP) Senapati, Anupam IPS led by Inspector Worchipem Ngalung, Officer-in-Charge of the Mao Police Station.

The joint team arrested the alleged smuggler Singamayum Sheik Akram (28 yrs) s/o Moulana Ahmed of Phoudel, Yairipok in Thoubal district of Manipur while conducting a random frisking and checking on the interstate bus plying between Imphal to Guwahati on the NH 02 at around 4.30 pm on Thursday.

The confiscated items weighed around 94 grams worth around Rs 94, 000 in the local black market.

A regular case has been registered at Mao Police Station for further investigation.

The law enforcement agency personnel’s actions against the drug smuggler came after the Pambei-led United National Liberation Front (UNLF) seized narcotic drugs worth around Rs 61 lakh in the international market on May 31, 2024.

The drugs seized from three smugglers were later destroyed in a fire in the presence of the general people at Hatta bazaar.
