Imphal: Lakshman Prasad Acharya, the governor of Assam and Manipur, has called for greater public support in promoting boxing at both regional and international levels.

This appeal was made during his meeting with a delegation from the Manipur Amateur Boxing Association (AMBA) at the Raj Bhavan in Imphal on Tuesday.

During the meeting, the Governor underscored the importance of nurturing boxing talent in the region and handed over a cheque of Rs 1 lakh to the association’s officials.

He pledged continued support from the Raj Bhavan to advance sports development in the area.

Governor Acharya also extended his best wishes to two young boxers from Manipur, N Robash Meitei and L Bidya Devi, who are part of the Indian contingent set to compete in the upcoming Asian Boxing Confederation (ASBC) Asian School Boys and Girls Boxing Championship.

The championship will take place in Al Ain City, Abu Dhabi, from August 27 to September 10, 2024.

In a separate gesture, the Manipur Amateur Boxing Association invited Governor Acharya to be the Chief Guest at the closing ceremony of the 2nd Governor’s Cup Boxing Championship, scheduled for September 29, 2024, in Imphal.

Three coaches from Manipur will also join the Indian team at the ASBC Championship.

Oinam Geeta Chanu from SAI STC Khuman Lampak will lead the contingent as the head coach for the national junior girls’ team, while N Sangita of Manipur Sports Police Club and Ch Bijeta of Mary Kom Boxing Academy will coach the junior girls and sub-junior girls teams, respectively.

These coaches, along with the participating boxers, recently concluded a 15-day national training camp held at IIS Bellary, Karnataka, and NSNIS, Patiala.

The Manipur Amateur Boxing Association expressed their best wishes for the success of the Indian contingent in the upcoming championship.
