Former Manipur Arts and Culture Minister Wakambam Thoiba passed away following a prolonged illness at his residence at Laipham Khunou in Imphal East district on Monday.

He was 75 years old at the time of his demise.

Thoiba is survived by his wife and a daughter.

Thoiba was elected from Heingang Assembly constituency which is the present constituency of the Chief Minister N Biren, two times on the Federal Party of Manipur (FPM) tickets in 1995 and 2000.

He was also the founding member of FPM, the then popular regional political party in the state.

He served as Arts & Culture and Cooperation Minister when late Wahengbam Nimapacha was the Chief Minister of the State.

He had visited various parts of Manipuri inhabited areas in north-eastern states including Hojai district in Assam to understand the grievances of the Manipuris settled there during his tenure as a minister.

Before joining into politics, Thoiba taught political science in the Oriental College in Imphal.

Thoiba also served as president for two terms of NEROCA, the popular football club in the State which is currently playing in the I-League matches of the country.
