The first commercial flight landed at Pakyong Greenfield Airport, the only airport in Sikkim on Thursday.

It was a SpiceJet commercial flight which made the historic landing at the Pakyong Airport.

Informing this on its official Twitter handle, the Sikkim Government stated: “The Historic Touchdown – First commercial flight ( Spice Jet) lands at Pakyong Greenfield Airport. Big day for Sikkim as it makes its Aviation debut.”

The SpiceJet operated flight was a daily direct flight on the Kolkata-Pakyong (Gangtok) route.

The SpiceJet Airlines also stated on its official Twitter handle on Thursday: “SpiceJet today operated its first daily direct flight on Kolkata-Pakyong (Gangtok) route.”

Starting that the commercial flight service has been initiated under the UDAN scheme, SpiceJet informed that it is the only airlines to operate at Pakyong Airport.

“Initiated under UDAN scheme, SpiceJet is the only carrier to operate at Pakyong. The historic landing of the inaugural flight was marked by a water cannon salute & traditional lamp lighting,” it tweeted.

Sikkim created aviation history on September 24, 2018 after Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the first ever airport of the State at Pakyong in East Sikkim.

This is the first airport in Sikkim and 100th in the country. With the inauguration, Sikkim put itself in the aviation map.

The Greenfields Airport at Pakyong, around 30 km from capital city of Gangtok is expected to improve connectivity in the area and benefit the people of the State in a big way.

The Pakyong Airport has been built at a total area of 201 acres at an altitude of 4500ft at an estimated cost of Rs 605 crores and the terminal building is spread at an area of 3000 square metres.
