The European Union (EU) has expressed its desire to initiate collaborative research based projects in the agriculture and horticulture sectors in the state.

The EU also wants to carry out geo-hazards mapping and climate change studies and initiate 3D modeling of archaeological sites using UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) applications and remote sensing technologies.

Arunachal Pradesh shares many common challenges in terms of environmental issues with the European countries. There are tremendous potential for scientific based research projects (research using remote sensing technologies) in the State,” a delegation of EU which visited the State Remote Sensing Application Centre (SRSAC) here on Saturday expressed.

The seven-member EU delegation comprised Tania Friedrichs (head of the delegation), Dr Vivek Dham (member, EU delegation), Inger Midtkandal (Royal Norwegian Embassy), Dr Srinivas Kaveri (director, CNRS, Paris), Alain Ghislain Baetens (Embassy of Belgium), Dr Massimo Spandoni (Embassy of Italy) and Dr Jakob Williams Oerberg (Royal Danish Embassy).

European Union is a political and economic union of 28 member states that are located primarily in Europe.

While stressing on improving the knowledge transfer between research institutions across the member countries, the EU team during their visit to the SRSAC also spoke about generating new and innovative understanding to enhance productivity of sustainable resources using innovative technologies.

The team also enquired about the formalities on sharing satellite data with international research institutions as Arunachal shares its boundaries with other countries like China and Myanmar and falls under restricted area.

Earlier, SRSAC director Dr H Dutta made a detailed presentation on initiatives taken by SRSAC in terms of using space technology for the development of Arunachal while joint director, Tana Tage highlighted the usage of drone technologies in 3D mapping and GIS based web application for exploring solar energy.

The EU delegation was impressed with the SRSAC for undertaking several innovative research projects in multi-disciplinary fields of remote sensing and GIS technologies.
