A dreaded rhino poacher who was allegedly involved in the killing of a rhino at Kath Chapori near Kaziranga National Park in Assam’s Golaghat district on February 24 last was nabbed during a joint operation launched by Assam Police and Forest Department officials.

The dreaded poacher has been identified as one Lakhya Pegu.

The dreaded poacher was arrested during an operation conducted at his residence situated at Pisolamukh in Gohpur.

The Forest Department officials had specific information that the poacher, Lakhya Pegu, along with his accomplishes had killed the rhino at Kath Chapori and made good their escape after chopping off the horn.

Lakhya Pegu was later brought to Kaziranga.

Kaziranga National Park officials along with police and officials from Golaghat forest division launched a marathon interrogation of the arrested poacher.

After severe grilling the dread poacher Lakhya Pegu confessed to the crime and admitted of killing the rhino on February 24 last and chopping off the horn.

Police have claimed to have secured the whereabouts of several other rhino poachers during the confessions made by Lakhya Pegu.

He was picked up on April 2 and after marathon interrogation, he was taken into custody by officials of the Golaghat forest range from officials of the Kaziranga National Park on April 3. The dreaded poacher will be produced before the judicial magistrate at Bokakhat on April 4.

Notably, Lakhya Pegu was involved in the killing of quite a few rhinos and he had been arrested on earlier occasions also.
