Darrang Police are ready to follow the directives of the Supreme Court in connection with the incidents of moral policing and mob lynching.

As per the recent directives of the Apex Court to the state governments to appoint one nodal police officer in each district, a committee with all the OCs of the police stations of the district has been formed under Superintendent of Police as the district nodal officer.

The OCs are bound to register such cases while the nodal officer himself will supervise the investigation. While initiating serious action in such cases police from now onwards will follow section 153 (a) of the IPC instead of the section under the IT act against persons spreading any kind of media leading to instigate mob violence. This was stated by Superintendent of Police, Darrang Sreejith T. before media at his office conference hall on Saturday.

Addressing media in presence of his senior subordinate officers including ASP, Satyajit Nath and DSP Amit Kr Hojai among others SP explained how the Apex Court in its verdict in response to a writ petition filed by one Tehseen S Poonawalia directed the government to follow three-step measures — preventive, remedial and punitive to curb such incidents in future. He also appealed to the media to be very careful in preparing reports of such incidents and also sensitize people not to spread any fake images videos in social media that may instigate some others as that will invite strong legal action against the person making the false news viral.
