India since Friday recorded its highest single-day spike in the number of coronavirus cases and deaths, taking the total number of infections to 1, 73,763 and the fatalities to 4971.
According to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the country saw a rise in the number of coronavirus cases to 7964 and deaths to 265 in the last 24 hours.
The number of active cases in the country is 86422 so far, according to the health ministry.
A total of 82369 patients have cured or discharged from hospitals until now.
Maharashtra continues to be the worst-affected state in the country registering a total of 62,228 cases till Saturday.
The second and the third states that have been worse affected by the coronavirus pandemic include Tamil Nadu and Delhi.
As per the health ministry data, Tamil Nadu had recorded a total of 20246 cases so far and Delhi’s COVID-19 tally climbed to 17386 on Saturday.
Of the 265 deaths reported since Friday morning, 116 were in Maharashtra, 82 in Delhi, 20 in Gujarat, 13 in Madhya Pradesh, nine in Tamil Nadu, seven in West Bengal, four each in Telangana and Rajasthan, two in Punjab and one each in Chhattisgarh, Jammu and Kashmir, Andhra Pradesh, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Kerala, Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh.
According to John Hopkins University tally, India is ranked ninth among the worst COVID-19-affected nations.
