Tragedy struck an under-construction building in water supply area of Kalyani below the MBB college stadium in Agartala, the capital city of Tripura on Saturday leading to the death of one labourer and leaving several others injured.

The dead construction labourer has been identified as one  Mantu Sheikh, aged around 31 years and hailing from Murshidabad in West Bengal.

Several of his fellow workers from the same West Bengal district have also sustained injuries because of the unscientific construction of the building.

Even though police and fire brigade personnel had rushed to the spot after being informed, they failed to do much to save the life while the disaster management group was conspicuous by its absence despite repeated phone calls.

Sources alleged that the builder, Amit Bhowmik, had been constructing a multi-storied building in a very unscientific manner in the water supply tank area of Kalyani below the MBB college stadium without proper soil test and a scientific planning .

As a result of the construction work, a huge hillock had eroded over the past few days due to heavy rain.

Around 1 pm on Saturday, a huge chunk of land slipped and fell steeply on the ground below where workers were working causing the mishap.
