Senior Congress Oommen Chandy addressing media in Shillong on Tuesday

Senior Congress leader and former two-time Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, who is in poll-bound Meghalaya to campaign for party candidates in the Christian dominated north eastern state, said on Tuesday that the party’s performance in the State will have a telling effect on the party at the Centre.

Chandy, in between his campaigns for Congress candidates held a press conference in Shillong on Tuesday where he exuded confidence that the Congress will retain power in Meghalaya, courtesy numerous development projects initiated under the stewardship of Chief Minister Mukul Sangma.

While heaving praises on the newly elected AICC president, the veteran Congress leader said the Congress party under the leadership of Rahul Gandhi is confident to lead a ‘united front of democratic and secular forces’.

The two-time former Kerala Chief Minister further said the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is trying to divide the country and is creating more and more issues while interfering in ‘people’s rights on what to eat and what to wear’.

Chandy also expressed his disgruntlement over the governance of Narendra Modi and asserted that the Congress with the support of other secular forces will be able to make a difference in 2019, when the country goes for general elections.

Chandy also alleged that the BJP government at the Centre is using ‘power and money’ to win the election in Meghalaya.
