Incumbent president of Karbi Cultural Society (KCS) Chandra Sing Kro and general secretary Bidya Sing Rongpi retained their posts during a conclave held at Karbi People’s Hall in Taralangso here on Thursday.
Chandra Sing Kro was re-elected president of KCS for the term 2018-21. This will be his fourth straight term as the president of KCS since 2007. The incumbent general secretary of KCS, Bidya Sing Rongpi, was elected unopposed.
For the president’s post, there was a fight between Kro and former MLA Chandra Kanta Terang, but Terang got defeated.
It may be mentioned that the 9th general conference of the KCS was held on January 9 and 10 last. A total of 71 members were selected through election and selection as office-bearers of the Society. From among the 71 members, 11 were elected while the remaining members were selected by the panel committee. There are also co-opted members who were inducted as office-bearers.
On Thursday, out of 71 office-bearers of the Society, a total of 56 members were present at Taralangso to elect the new president and general secretary.
From the 55 votes polled, Kro got 35 while Terang got 20 votes. Kro won the election by a difference of 15 votes. The new office-bearers of the Society will take charge soon after the 44th Karbi Youth Festival to be held from February 15 to 19 at Taralangso in Diphu, the district headquarters of Karbi Anglong district.
