The central government on Friday said it will provide full support for the development of Assam and Northeast.
“The Union Home Minister said that Centre will give full support for the development of the state. Police modernisation will also take place in larger way,” said Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Friday in New Delhi.

He called on Union Home Minister Amit Shah and congratulated him for assuming the charge as India’s Home Minister.
“I have conveyed the wishes of the people of Assam and Northeast,” said Sonowal.

Quoting Shah, Sonowal said, “He said that the central government will give all around support for the development of Assam and northeastern states.”
Modernisation of state police force for turning Assam police into a smart police force was a key point of discussion during the meeting and the Chief Minister apprised about the implementation status of schemes like MOITRI for modernisation of infrastructure of police stations in the state.
Apart from seeking financial support for MOITRI project, the chief minister also sought central government’s assistance in upgrading Assam Police Training College into a world class police academy and strengthening of Assam Police’s Cyberdome which is set up for cyber intelligence gathering and cyber investigation among others.
Support from the central government was also sought for upgrading constabulary training and providing satisfactory housing to police personnel in the state, the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) stated in a press communique.
The chief minister also apprised the Union Home Minister about the status of constitution of the coordinated police force for the entire North East Region – NEPOL.
Sonowal urged the Union Home Minister for setting up of a Co-ordination Centre at Guwahati for NEPOL which would bring a sea change in coordinated policing in the NE region.
During the meeting, chief minister Sonowal also urged the central government to take expedient steps for completion of sealing of Indo-Bangladesh Border and also review the effectiveness of technological solutions implemented in the riverine areas of Dhubri Sector of Indo-Bangladesh border.
Status of NRC update process and the central government’s approval for setting up of 400 Foreigners’ Tribunal (FT) in the state also came up for discussion. He also thanked the Union Home Ministry for approving the eFT Project, an IT-based System which would provide greater transparency and efficiency in the functioning of the FTs.
Later on Friday, the chief minister also called on Union Minister of Rural Development, Panchayati Raj and Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Narendra Singh Tomar at the latter’s office and discussed various important issues.
