Tripura chief minister Biplab Kumar Deb and BJP national general secretary Ram Madhav along with two newly elected MPs of the State after taking part in the ‘Dhanyabad Rally’ on Friday rushed to Devtamura late in the afternoon.

Located 75 km from Agartala, Debtamura is a hill range in South Tripura district of Tripura.

Literally, Debtamura means the peak of God’s and is famous for its archaeological site of rock sculptures, a panel of carved images, on the steep mountain wall on the bank of Gomati River.

The approach to the site is only by boat, an hour journey from Amarpur to Maharani boating through the dense forest and the wilderness.

According to BJP national general secretary Ram Madhav, the journey resembles the travel by water through the Amazon rain forest and has huge tourism potential and properly explored shall not only attract domestic but also foreign tourist.

Hundreds of tourists from the State and outside flock to Devtamura but only a few years back due to the insurgency problem it was next to impossible to visit the site.

Chobimura, the archaeological site at Devtamura dates back to the fifteenth or sixteenth centuries.

The site includes colossal carvings of the images of Shiva and Parvati.

The purpose of the carvings and the artists who carved them are unknown.

The statues are carved on the steep sloping rock exposures of the Kalajhari Hills which drains into the Gomti River.

All total there are 37 rock cut images which also include images of Ganesha, Kartikeya, Mahisasur Mardini, Durga, Vishnu and many others.

The stone images are reported to mark the revival of Brahmanism during the 15 to 16th century when influence Buddhism waned in India.

Adding to Ram Madhav, Tripura chief minister Biplab Kumar Deb who also visited the spot for the first time informed that the state government with the financial help of the central government is developing various road connectivity and infrastructure and developing tourist spots in and around that area to bring more tourist and which can play a vital role in solving the unemployment problem of the State.

Chobimura has grown by several folds and along with the arrival of tourist the area is also fast developing and increasing income source of the local population.

Deb added that the central government is spending huge amount for development of the tourism sector and Chobimura has immense scope as a tourist site and with proper facilities has the potential of attracting domestic as well as international tourist.
