Sensation prevails after a youth committed suicide by hanging from a tree on the divider at the VIP Road in Guwahati on Saturday amid lockdown.

The youth, aged 30-35 years, was found hanging from a tree at the Magazine area near Hindustan College in the city.

The deceased, a resident of Sipajhar in Darrang district, has been identified as Nipen Deka alias Nitul Deka, said police sources.

Sources said the youth worked at Nirupama Engineering, but due to COVID19-induced lockdown, he started working as a barber.

Police sources said in the morning on Saturday, the locals noticed the youth hanging from the tree and immediately called the police.

Later a team of city police rushed to the spot and recovered the body.

The body has been sent for conducting post-mortem.

During the primary investigation, it is suspected that the youth died due to financial crisis.

Earlier, the youth was residing in a rented house with his four-member family in Guwahati.

But due to COVID19 pandemic and lockdown, he started living alone in a rented room in the city.

Due to surge in COVID19 positive cases, the Assam government imposed a week-long lockdown in Guwahati from June 29-July 12 and extended the lockdown period for one more week from July 12-19.

In order to contain the spread of COVID19, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the first nationwide lockdown with effect from March 24 midnight, and the lockdown was continued to be extended due to rise in positive cases.
