A formal education in journalism has become the need of the hour at present, particularly considering the growth of alternative media which has also encouraged citizen journalism in the country for empowerment of the common people.

Keeping in mind the recent growth of the alternative media, opportunities for citizen journalism and the need for quality journalism, The Journalism School (TJS) is soon to be on the academic ground this year.

The Journalism School is a media school located at Guwahati which will start the academic year with its induction. Conceptualized by some of the prominent names from the media Industry, TJS is promoted by Girijananda Chowdhury Institute of Management and Technology (GIMT) .

Affiliated to Assam Science and Technology University, Guwahati, TJS is also associated with the North East Now media house.

The TJS is offering One year PG Diploma courses divided into three terms of four months each.

The first term would comprise the foundation course mandatory for all students while in the second term, students can specialize in their field of interest—print, television, data journalism and new media. Students would bring out their own newspaper, TV shows, online magazine and take classes in three elective courses chosen by them.

During the third term, students would do an internship of one month with a media house of their choice and complete their dissertations on their given subjects. This would also include a short module on investigative journalism.

On the completion of the course, TJS will provide placement assistance to the successful candidates.

Journalism, being one of the most sought careers of the present time requires diverse and dynamic specialised options. The new media platforms have increasing demand.
