Narayan Chandra Goswami

Vaishnavite scholar and the xatradhikar of Majuli’s Natun Kamalabari Xatra, Narayan Chandra Goswami passed away in a private hospital in Guwahati on Tuesday.  He was 80.

According to family sources, Goswami was suffering from liver cirrhosis and was admitted to city’s Nemcare Hospital recently.

Goswami was known for his work on the Brajawali language and neo-Vaishnavite traditions and Sattriya culture.

He was conferred with the honorary Doctor of Literature (D Lit) degree by Dibrugarh University in 2010.

Goswami was also a recipient of Srimanta Shankardev Bota and Shankardev Shilpi Sadhana Bota.

He translated Ramayana from Sanskrit into Assamese.

Goswami also edited the Kirtan Ghosa and Naam Ghosa written by Sanakarvdeva and Madhabdeva respectively.
