Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Sushmita Dev has filed nomination for by-polls to the vacant Rajya Sabha seat from West Bengal.

Sushmita Dev filed her nomination at the West Bengal Assembly (Bidhan Sabha) in Kolkata on Monday.

Senior TMC leaders including Mukul Roy accompanied Sushmita Dev for the nomination filing.

Filed my nominations at the Bidhan Sabha, Kolkatta for Rajya Sabha bi election. I thank the senior leaders of TMC who remained present with me and all the Members of the Legislative Assembly who proposed my name,” Sushmita Dev said.

It is expected that Sushmita Dev would win the by-polls to the Rajya Sabha seat unopposed.

The main opposition BJP in West Bengal, on Monday, said that it will not field a candidate for the by-poll.

“BJP will not nominate any candidate for Rajya Sabha bypoll due in West Bengal. Outcome is predetermined. Our focus is to make sure unelected CM to remain unelected,” Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari said.

The by-poll to the Rajya Sabha seat in West Bengal is slated to be held on October 4.

The by-election has been necessitated as TMC’s Manas Bhunia quit the Rajya Sabha after winning the assembly election from Sabang in Paschim Medinipur.

The TMC had last week named Sushmita Dev, who recently joined the party after quitting the Congress, as its candidate for by-poll to the Rajya Sabha seat.

Sushmita Dev, who was one of the national spokespersons of the Congress party and its women’s wing chief, switched over to the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress last month.

She has been assigned the job of looking after TMC’s operations in Assam and Tripura, which is bound for assembly elections.

Sushmita Dev will arrive in Tripura again on Tuesday.

“Heading to Tripura tomorrow,” the senior TMC leader said.
