The ongoing anti-Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) agitation was started in Northeast especially in Assam but now it has engulfed the entire country, said CPM general secretary Sitaram Yechury on Friday.

“BJP government has betrayed the sentiments and emotions of the people of Assam. Bypassing the historic Assam Accord of 1985, they (BJP government) have passed the CAA…the Act violates the basic principle of the Accord,” Yechury told Northeast Now.

He said that the agitation in Assam and entire Northeast was spontaneous.

“People have understood the religious aim of this party (BJP),” said Yechury.

“The agitation that was started in Assam and Northeast has now engulfed the entire country. This was bound to happen. This will continue until and unless government withdraws the CAA,” he said.

Yechury said that his party will continue anti-CAA agitation across the country.

“Not only CAA, the government is playing religious politics with NRC as well,” said Yechury adding “religion could not be a basis for granting citizenship.”

The anti-CAA agitation continued in some places of the national capital on Friday with the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) keeping three metro stations including Lal Quila, Kashmiri Gate and Pragati Maidan closed for the entire day.
