Guwahati: Six traditional crafts from Assam have received the Geographical Indication (GI) Tags with support from NABARD, regional office, Guwahati. It has been facilitated by Padma Shri Dr Rajani Kant, GI Expert
The newly added names to the list of GI tags are Jaapi, Bihu Dhol, Sarthebari Metal Craft, Asharikandi Terracotta Craft, Pani Mateka Craft, and Mising Handloom Products.
Each of these crafts represents a distinct aspect of Assam’s traditional craftsmanship and cultural identity.
Assam CM Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma tweeted right after the release of the list.

Jaapi is a traditional conical hat woven from bamboo and cane, which is not just an accessory but a symbol of Assamese identity.

Assamese Dhol’s rhythmic beats enlivenes festivities and cultural celebrations.
Sarthebari Metal Craft showcases the exquisite skills of artisans in working with brass and bell metal, producing intricate and ornate pieces that reflect the region’s artistic finesse.

Meanwhile, the Assam Asharikandi Terracotta Craft from the town of Asharikandi highlights the mastery of crafting with clay, producing decorative and utilitarian items that bear testimony to Assam’s craftsmanship.
The Assam Pani Mateka Craft, consisting of traditional water pots crafted from clay, and Assam Mising Handloom Products, showcasing the weaving techniques and vibrant patterns of the Mising community, further add to the diversity and richness of Assam’s cultural heritage.
