Tinsukia: In a landmark judgment, six Assam police personnel were sentenced to life imprisonment by a local court in Tinsukia district for the brutal beating and subsequent death of Ajit Sonowal in an open market 11 years ago.

Tinsukia district and sessions judge Dipankar Bora handed down the life sentences under Section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code, marking a significant ruling in the long-pending case.

The incident occurred on October 7, 2013, when Ajit Sonowal was severely beaten by the Assam police personnel at Ambikapur market.

Following the assault, Sonowal was transferred to Assam Medical College and Hospital in Dibrugarh for treatment, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

On October 9, 2013, Sonowal’s father filed an FIR at Sadiya police station in Assam, prompting an investigation.

The investigation led to the filing of a charge-sheet and the commencement of the trial in the Tinsukia District and Sessions Court.

The court, after thoroughly examining the evidence, witness testimonies, and arguments presented by government advocate Ashok Chaudhary, found the six Assam police personnel guilty of murder.
