Dibrugarh: With Independence Day around the corner, security has been ramped up across Upper Assam to thwart potential subversive activities.
Despite the ULFA-I’s annual call for a boycott of the national celebrations, a growing number of people are now openly participating in the festivities.
Intensive night patrolling and vehicle checkpoints have been implemented in key areas of Upper Assam.
Security forces are working tirelessly to prevent any untoward incidents. Vital infrastructure, including oil and gas pipelines, railway networks, stations, markets, and public spaces, are under constant surveillance.
In Tinsukia, authorities have established checkpoints at all exit points to conduct thorough vehicle inspections. Similar measures are in place across the region to curb criminal activities.
“We are maintaining a round-the-clock presence at critical installations and monitoring all activities closely,” stated a police official.
Dibrugarh Superintendent of Police Rakesh Reddy emphasized the heightened security measures in place, including 24/7 surveillance with three shifts of personnel.
“We have deployed six commando units from Assam Police to safeguard vital installations, and joint patrols with the CRPF are ongoing,” Reddy said.
The police are focusing on area domination and have increased patrols on highways, roads, railway tracks, bridges, and river embankments.
High-priority targets for security reinforcement include the Bogibeel Bridge, Dibrugarh Airport, railway station, radio station, oil and gas terminals, transmission towers, and industrial facilities.
While security remains a top priority, the community is also embracing the spirit of Independence Day. Various organizations have planned cultural programs and bike rallies to celebrate the occasion.
However, the threat persists. Assam Director General of Police (DGP) GP Singh has warned of a potential ULFA-I attack near the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border before Independence Day.
