At least 200 Foreigners’ Tribunals are likely to be operational in Assam by next month.

The Assam government has recently appointed 221 practising lawyers, retired civil servants and judicial officers as members of the Tribunals.

A total of 2,000 people have applied for the position of Members in the Foreigners’ Tribunals.

The Foreigners Tribunals are likely to take up the cases of those 19 lakh people who are excluded from the final National Register of Citizens (NRC) released on August 31.

The excluded people are expected to approach the Tribunals before 120 days time to settle their claims.

While there are 100 Foreigners’ Tribunals in Assam at present, the Assam government is setting up another 400 such tribunals.

“In the interest of public service, the following selected candidates have been appointed as member, Foreigners’ Tribunal, for a period of 1 (one) year from the date of taking over charge,” a senior official said on Friday.

“They shall have to attend a two-day training programme in Guwahati on September 28 and 29,”he said.

All the newly appointed FT members are likely to assume charge from October 1, he added.

The State government started the process of setting up 400 new FT’s considering the backlog of over two lakh cases.

“The excluded people have to get a certified copy of rejection of their claims citing the reason for rejection. With the certified copy in hand, the excluded people have to approach the Tribunals to settle their claim,” said the official.
