Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said that the National Register of Citizens (NRC) was implemented in Assam on the orders of the Supreme Court.

While speaking at a BJP election rally at the Ramlila Maidan in New Delhi on Sunday, Modi said that the idea of implementing NRC in Assam came during the time when Congress was in power.

Modi also said that the issue of NRC was not discussed in Parliament or the Union Cabinet ever since the BJP came to power at the Centre.

“I can assure 130 crore Indians that since 2014, when our government was formed, the term NRC has not figured in any discussion in the government,” he added.

The prime minister also lashed out at the Congress and accused them for spreading ‘rumours and lies’ about Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and NRC.

He also assured that the BJP government has never discriminated anyone on the basis of religion.

Apart from hitting out the Congress, Modi also claimed that some educated ‘Urban Naxals’ are trying to mislead the people on CAA and NRC.

He asked his haters to burn his effigies but not to vandalize public property.

“My rivals should burn my effigy if they hate me but don’t set public property on fire,” Modi said.
