After publication of the final updated National Register of Citizens (NRC) for Assam, the Delhi Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president has sought similar exercise for Delhi.
Assam’s final updated NRC was published on Saturday with inclusion of 3,11,21,04 genuine Indian citizens while 19,06,657 names have been excluded.
The 1951 NRC has been updated to identify illegal foreigners, who entered Assam after March 24, 1971 midnight.

The Delhi BJP chief’s statement is significant keeping in view of the Delhi Assembly elections slated to be held next year.
According to media reports, demanding updating of the NRC for Delhi to identify illegal migrants, Tiwari said the situation in the national capital is “dangerous”.

A media report quoted Tiwari as saying, “The situation in Delhi is becoming so dangerous that it is necessary to have NRC.”
Indicating that the BJP would update the NRC in Delhi if time comes, Tiwari has been further quoted as saying, “Illegal migrants who have settled here are the most dangerous… we will implement NRC when the time comes.”

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal earlier said the NRC update process be carried out across the whole country.
Meanwhile, after the publication of the updated NRC, convenor of the BJP-led North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA) and Assam Finance Minister Himanta Biswa stated that many names got their names included in it through manipulation of legacy data.

On his Twitter handle, Sarma said: “Names of many Indian citizens who migrated from Bangladesh as refugees prior to 1971 have not been included in the NRC because authorities refused to accept refugee certificates.”
“Many names got included because of manipulation of legacy data as alleged by many,” he tweeted.
Reiterating re-verification and correct the updated NRC which was published on Saturday, Sarma tweeted: “I reiterate that as requested by Central and State governments at least 20% reverification (bordering districts) and 10% re-verification(remaining districts) should be allowed by Honble Apex court for a correct and fair NRC.“
