Legendary Assamese singer Archana Mahanta passed in a Guwahati-based hospital where she was admitted to on July 14 after she suffered a brain stroke.

She was known for her melodious Bihu and folk songs and she formed a successful pairing with her late husband Bihu Samrat Khagen Mahanta.

Her death has left an irreparable void in the Assamese music industry.

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has mourned the death of the music icon.

In a tweet, Sonowal said, “Anguished at the demise of renowned Assamese folk singer Archana Mahanta baidew. Today, we have lost a shining star among the cultural stalwarts of the state. I offer my deepest condolences and join all her well-wishers and fans in prayers for the departed soul.”

 

She leaves behind a host of relatives and friends.

Her son noted singer Angarag ‘Papon’ Mahanta could not be reached for comments.
