Top Congress leader Rahul Gandhi who is in Assam campaigning for the party ahead of the third phase of the Assam Assembly elections has lambasted the BJP-led Assam Government over the issue of Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

Rahul Gandhi slammed the BJP-led Assam Government for ordering the police to ‘fire’ upon unarmed civilians who were out on the streets to protest against the CAA in December 2019.

As many as five (5) persons were shot dead by the police during the anti-CAA protests in Assam.

Rahul Gandhi said that killing youth of the State during the anti-CAA protests in fact was an attempt by the BJP-Government in the State to ‘murder’ Assam.

“When I had come to meet family of Dipanjal Das (killed in Guwahati during anti-CAA protests in 2019), I felt that bullets weren’t fired at one youth, it was fired at Assam. It was attempted to murder Assam. He wasn’t just a youth, he was an idea. He was Assam,” Rahul Gandhi said while addressing an election rally at Chaygaon in Kamrup (Rural) district.

“Dipanjal Das was a youth of Assam. BJP government didn’t do what it was supposed to. They didn’t provide him employment and when he stood for Assam peacefully, he was shot dead by the BJP-RSS. We (Congress) give you 5 guarantees, the 1st being that we won’t let CAA get implemented in Assam,” Rahul Gandhi added.

Notably, the BJP seems to have decided to turn a blind eye on the death of 5 youth in Assam during the anti-CAA protests.

Top BJP leaders including Union Home Minister Amit Shah recently while addressing an election rally said that Assam has not witnessed any kind of protest under the regime of the BJP-led Government.

Amit Shah further went on to say that in the last five years of BJP regime in Assam, no innocent life has been lost in police firing.

“During the last 5 years of BJP rule in Assam under the leadership of Sarbananda Sonowal, there has been no protest and none died in police firing,” Amit Shah had said in an election rally.

However, the facts state otherwise and is known to all in Assam.
