For the first time in Assam, an IPS officer has been appointed as the secretary to the home department of the state government.
According to an Assam government order, issued on Wednesday by TP Borgohain, secretary to the personnel department, IPS officer of 2004 batch Diganta Barah has been transferred and posted as the secretary to the home department of the Assam government.
He is currently serving as the deputy inspector general of police (administration), Assam.
“In the interest of public service, Shri Diganta Barah, IPS (RR-2004), Deputy Inspector General of Police (Admin), Assam, is transferred and posted as Secretary to the Govt. of Assam, Home Department,” the order read.
Diganta Barah hails from Kalabari near Gohpur under Biswanath district.
He earlier served as the joint commissioner of Guwahati Police and Dhubri superintendent of police.
It is not that the Assam government has appointed police officers in civil administration.
Earlier, Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta, the state’s current director general of police (DGP) served as the joint secretary in the Union ministry of heavy industries and public enterprises.
The Sarbananda Sonowal-led Assam government appointed IPS officer Anand Prakash Tiwari as the managing director of the Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC) to revive the corporation.
Anand Prakash Tiwari is a 2004-batch IPS officer.
Prior to Tiwari, the ASTC was never headed by any police officer.
