Indian Army and Assam Rifles personnel on Wednesday nabbed a key arms and ammunition supplier of NSCN(K) at Naharkatia in Assam’s Dibrugarh district.

The arms supplier has been identified as Sajid Ali, a resident of Namti Chariali in Sivsagar district.

Live ammunition and weapons were recovered from the arms supplier’s possession.

According to sources, Sajid Ali supplied arms and ammunition to NSCN(K) and his arrest has been termed as a big blow to the insurgent group.

The joint operation was carried out on the basis of specific inputs that the individual was moving towards Naharkatia to deliver arms and ammunition to someone.

But, he fell into the trap of security forces.

Dibrugarh additional superintendent of police, Padmanav Baruah said, “An arms and ammunition supplier of NSCN(K) was apprehended by the Army and he was handed over to Naharkatia Police Station. We have started interrogation and forwarded him to the court.”

“He is involved in the smuggling of arms and ammunition for NSCN(K). He was also involved in providing assistance to the armed cadres and carried out various illegal activities for the insurgent group in the border areas of Assam and Nagaland,” sources said.

According to sources, security forces have intensified counter-insurgency operations against insurgent groups along Assam, Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh borders ahead of Republic Day celebrations.

“During the winter season, the insurgent groups try to procure arms and ammunition, food supplies and money which is not so easy during the rainy season,” said sources.
