If COVID-19 cases rise in Assam rise exponentially, lockdown will be imposed in the State.

This was informed by Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Monday.

“If COVID-19 cases in Assam rise at a rapid pace and the situation starts getting out of control, for the welfare of the people, lockdown will be imposed in the State,” said Assam CM Sarbananda Sonowal.

“We don’t want to find ourselves in that situation,” added Sonowal.

Assam CM Sarbananda Sonowal made this statement after chairing a COVID-19 review meeting in Guwahati.

The meeting was also attended by Assam Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Assam DGP Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta and other top police and health department officials of the State.

On the other hand, Assam Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the State Government at present is not planning to impose lockdown.

According to the Assam Health Minister, situation in Assam has not deteriorated to an extent of imposing lockdown in the State.

“There is no question of imposing lockdown in the State when the daily COVID-19 case count is merely 600-700,” said Assam Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

Himanta Biswa Sarma further added that last year lockdown was imposed to improve the health infrastructure in Assam.

Meanwhile, Assam CM Sarbananda Sonowal has urged the people of Assam to abide by the COVID-19 guidelines and SOPs issued by the Assam Health Department and Union Health Ministry.

Notably, Assam’s COVID-19 scenario seems to be worsening with every passing day

Assam, on Sunday, logged 6 new COVID-19 related deaths.

Kamrup-Metro, Barpeta, Cachar, Dhemaji, Morigaon and Tinsukia districts recorded one COVID-19 death case each.

Moreover, 639 new COVID-19 positive cases were detected in Assam on Sunday.

As many as 354 fresh COVID-19 cases were detected from Kamrup-Metro district on Sunday.

Apart from Kamrup-Metro, cases were also reported from the districts of Kamrup-Rural (35), Nagaon (28) and Dibrugarh (26).

Assam’s COVID-19 positivity rate, on Sunday, was recorded at 2.74 percent.
